The Commissions for Protection of Child Rights Act, 2005

The Commissions for Protection of Child Rights Act, 2005, was enacted to give effect to India’s commitments under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1992) and other international instruments. It establishes a structured legal framework for the protection and promotion of child rights across the country.
This Act provides for the constitution of a National Commission and State Commissions for Protection of Child Rights, which are statutory bodies empowered to monitor, inquire into violations, and recommend measures for safeguarding children’s rights. It also facilitates the setting up of dedicated Children’s Courts for speedy trial of offences against children.
The Act plays a vital role in India’s legal system by institutionalising child rights protection, ensuring accountability, and creating specialised mechanisms to address issues such as child labour, trafficking, juvenile justice, and education. It strengthens the implementation of laws and policies aimed at creating a safer and more supportive environment for every child.
