The Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma University of Health Sciences, Rohtak Act, 2008

The Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma University of Health Sciences, Rohtak (PBDS UHSR) was established in 2008 under Haryana Act No. 26 of 2008, with the primary objective of advancing education, research, and training in health sciences, including modern medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, and Indian systems of medicine like Ayurveda and Homeopathy. The university was named in honor of Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma, a prominent freedom fighter and the first Chief Minister of Haryana. The Act was notified on June 2, 2008, and came into force on the same date, as per the government notification dated August 18, 2008.

Background and Establishment
Before the establishment of PBDS UHSR, health sciences education in Haryana was primarily affiliated with Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak, and Kurukshetra University. The need for a dedicated health sciences university arose to ensure uniformity in standards, promote specialized research, and streamline the administration of medical institutions. The Act transferred the Pt. B.D. Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), Rohtak, from MDU to the newly formed university, along with its assets, liabilities, and employees. This transition aimed to enhance the quality of medical education and healthcare services in the state.

Significance and Impact
The establishment of PBDS UHSR marked a significant milestone in Haryana's healthcare education system. By centralizing health sciences education under one umbrella, the university has:
Improved standardization of medical education.
Enhanced research opportunities in emerging health sciences.
Strengthened the administration of PGIMS and affiliated institutions.
Ensured compliance with national and international standards through collaborations and regulatory adherence.
