The Delhi School Education Act, 1973

The Delhi School Education Act, 1973 was enacted to standardize and regulate school education in the Union Territory of Delhi, ensuring uniformity in administration, teacher welfare, and student rights. Post-independence, Delhi witnessed rapid urbanization and an influx of diverse educational institutions, leading to disparities in management, fee structures, and teacher employment conditions. The Act aimed to address these issues by providing a legal framework for recognition, funding, and governance of schools, while balancing autonomy with regulatory oversight. It also safeguarded the rights of minority institutions under Article 30(1) of the Constitution, which grants minorities the right to establish and administer their own educational institutions.

By addressing disparities in funding, management, and teacher rights, the Delhi School Education Act, 1973, has played a pivotal role in shaping a more equitable and organized schooling system in Delhi.
