The Farm Laws Repeal Act, 2021

The Farm Laws Repeal Act, 2021, enacted on November 30, 2021, repealed three controversial farm laws introduced in 2020: the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, the Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act. These laws had sparked widespread protests from farmers, who feared they would undermine their income and traditional market systems. The repeal restored the original provisions of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, by omitting sub-section (1A). This Act holds historical significance as it marked a rare instance of the Indian government reversing major legislation in response to public dissent, highlighting the importance of stakeholder consultation in policymaking. The bare act provides the legal text of the repeal and amendments, serving as a reference for understanding the legislative changes.
