The Fertiliser (Control) Order, 1985

The Fertiliser (Control) Order, 1985 is a key piece of legislation enacted under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955. It was introduced to regulate the quality, pricing, distribution, and sale of fertilisers in India, ensuring they meet prescribed standards and are available to farmers at fair prices. The order also covers biofertilisers, organic fertilisers, and customised fertilisers, and establishes mechanisms for registration, inspection, and quality control. It plays a vital role in maintaining agricultural productivity and protecting farmers from substandard products. This order replaced the earlier Fertiliser (Control) Order of 1957 and continues to be a cornerstone in India’s agricultural regulatory framework.
