The Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987

The Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 was enacted to give effect to Article 39A of the Indian Constitution, which mandates free legal aid to ensure justice is accessible to all, particularly the marginalized and economically weaker sections. The Act established a nationwide framework for providing free and competent legal services through National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), State Legal Services Authorities (SLSAs), and District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs). It also introduced Lok Adalats (people’s courts) for speedy dispute resolution through conciliation. The Act emphasizes aiding women, SC/ST communities, disabled persons, victims of trafficking, and other disadvantaged groups. Key provisions include eligibility criteria for legal aid, funding mechanisms, and the role of legal services institutions in promoting justice. The law reinforces the constitutional commitment to equal justice and judicial inclusivity.
