The Maritime Anti-Piracy Act, 2022

The Maritime Anti-Piracy Act, 2022, enacted by India on January 31, 2023, aligns with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to combat piracy on the high seas. This law defines piracy, prescribes severe punishments—including life imprisonment or death for fatal acts—and establishes designated courts for speedy trials. It empowers authorized personnel to arrest suspects, seize pirate ships, and ensures jurisdiction over offenders, including foreign nationals and stateless persons. The Act strengthens India's legal framework against maritime threats, reinforcing international cooperation to safeguard global shipping routes. Its provisions also address extradition and protect officials acting in good faith, making it a critical tool in modern anti-piracy efforts.
