The Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014
The Street Vendors Act, 2014, is a landmark legislation enacted to protect the livelihoods of urban street vendors while systematically regulating street vending activities across India. Historically, street vendors faced frequent evictions and harassment without legal safeguards. This Act was introduced to recognize their economic contribution, provide legal security, and integrate them into the urban planning framework.
The Act establishes a structured system through Town Vending Committees, mandates surveys of vendors, and provides for the issuance of Certificates of Vending. It outlines the rights and duties of vendors, regulates vending zones, and sets up grievance redressal mechanisms. Importantly, it prohibits arbitrary eviction and ensures relocation with proper procedure. By balancing the needs of vendors with urban management, the Act aims to foster inclusive cities while safeguarding a vital segment of the informal economy.
