The Tripura University Act, 2006

The Tripura University Act, 2006, enacted by the Parliament of India on 10th January 2007, established Tripura University as a central university, replacing the earlier Tripura University established under the Tripura University Act, 1987 (Tripura Act 11 of 1987). This transition marked a significant shift in the university's governance, affiliating it directly under the Central Government, thereby enhancing its academic and administrative stature. The Act came into force on 2nd July 2007, as notified by the Central Government.
The establishment of Tripura University under the 2006 Act was part of a broader effort to promote higher education in northeastern India, with a focus on integrating regional needs, such as studies in tribal life and culture, with national educational standards. The Act aimed to create a robust academic environment by providing research facilities, interdisciplinary courses, and distance education, while ensuring inclusivity for all sections of society, including women, Scheduled Castes, and Scheduled Tribes.
Inclusivity: The university is open to all, irrespective of caste, creed, or gender, with special provisions for marginalized groups.
Discipline and Appeals: Detailed procedures for student and staff discipline, including arbitration and appeals.
Financial Accountability: Annual reports and audited accounts are submitted to the Visitor and Parliament.
The Tripura University Act, 2006, provides a comprehensive framework for the university's functioning, emphasizing academic excellence, governance transparency, and regional development. By centralizing its administration, the Act ensures Tripura University's growth as a premier institution in India's northeastern region, aligning with national educational goals while addressing local needs.
